Western New York and the Underground Railroad

By Amy L. Krzeminski

The Reverend Monsignor Walter O. Kern gave a talk for the Preservation Coalition at the Village of Williamsville Meeting House on May 22 titled "Making an Underground Railroad Tour: The Buffalo Connection."

With the meeting house nearly full, the Pastor spoke of the locations of the underground railroad, the slaves and their fight to escape for freedom, plus the lives of those who helped the slaves.

Often, it had been necessary for the slaves to turn around on their trip if they were being followed.

The Pastor recalled stories of Harriet Tubman and other brave individuals.

As an archivist, the Reverend talked about how he collected his information, since little had been written down by those who were involved in the underground railroad.

Much deep research and study, collecting knowledge from second and third hand sources, has given the Pastor the wealth of information he was able to share with his audience.
