Restoration of Kleinhans Starts
One of Buffalo's world-famous landmarks, Kleinhans Music Hall, is getting a long overdue face-lift. The 1940 building was designed by the Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen and his son Eero.
The $10 million restoration is needed to undo years of inadequate maintenance. The work will be spread out over five summers so that the hall does not have to close during the concert season, and the financing can be spread out.
The first phase of $1.5 million, which is being provided by the city will deal with safety and damage to the building.
The restoration is to be "by the book", based on the original plans and specifications returning the building to nearly the same condition it was when it opened, down to its lobby sofas and wooded telephone booths.
The restoration is being overseen by Buffalo architect Ted Lownie.
