Coalition Expands Tour Schedule
The Preservation Coalition is undertaking its most ambitious tour program since its creation with a total of 37 scheduled tours being offered from May through October.
New tours this year include Endangered Landmarks, Europe on $30 a Day, Around the Fargo Estate, Cold Spring Walkabout, and Lighthouse to Lighthouse.
These tours join our old standbys, the downtown tour and the Richardson tour, as well as popular tours from last year such as Blaze of Glory, the Historic Harbor by Boat, the West Village Reborn, and Millionaires Row.
This year the Coalition is working with two neighborhood groups, the Parkside Community Association and the Hamlin Park Community and Taxpayers Association, to do tours of their neighborhoods.
Our day-long bus tour this season will explore Cobblestone Landmarks. We'll visit numerous cobblestone structures including houses, a school, an 1834 church, the cobblestone museum as well as the historic Courthouse District in Albion. Lunch at the 1824 Village Inn is included. The October 10 date should also be perfect for viewing the fall foliage.
Tours this year have been more popular than ever, with many tours selling out in advance. A great deal of credit for this must go to the outstanding 16-page tour brochure designed by Tim Tielman of American Media. If you haven't gotten a copy of the brochure or need one for a friend, call the Coalition office at 873-3626.
Expansion of the tour program was made possible by the many volunteers who are taking part. Jason Aronoff conducted a rigorous training session this spring for Coalition volunteers who are leading the Downtown Masterpieces walking tours, our most popular tour. This was the Coalition's first formalized docent training for volunteers to help meet the increasing demand for tours not only this year but when the 1993 World University Games are held in Buffalo next summer. The success of the Coalition's annual tour series is due in no small part to the tremendous dedication and support of volunteers like Jason Aronoff. Thanks to all our volunteers!
In addition to our regularly scheduled tours, the Coalition runs special tours on request for groups. A group of Williamsville social studies teachers participated in a series of eight Coalition tours this spring as part of a continuing education workshop to learn first-hand information about architectural heritage and historic sites in the Buffalo area.
Dr. Cindy Beeley, coordinator of social studies for the Williamsville Central Schools, worked with Coalition director Wanda Terry to organize 16 hours of tours that included the Downtown Masterpieces walking tour, the historic waterfront by bus, and H. H. Richardson's Twin Towers. Coalition tour guides for the series were Lynne Adamczyk, Jason Aronoff, John Feather, Peter Filim, and Tim Tielman.
The fickle spring weather explains the group's slogan: "If it's Thursday it must be raining."
The Coalition has also been working with the Greater Buffalo Convention & Visitors Bureau to publicize the tours to conventions that are coming to Buffalo.
If you have a group that would like to set up a special tour, call the office for details.
This year we have available gift certificates for the tours. Gift certificates in $5 denominations are good toward the purchase of tickets to any lecture, tour, or event during the 1992 calendar year. The certificates, a great gift idea, are available through the Coalition office.
In addition to being able to make reservations over the phone, tickets for the bus and boat tours are available at The Book Revue, 1382 Hertel Ave.; Creative Sundries, 66 Allen St.; and Old Editions Book Shop, 3124 Main St.
