Architecture Firm Wins Award for Wright Building

The Buffalo/Western New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects has selected Foit-Albert Associates, Architects and Engineers, P.C., as its recipient of their first Award for Historic Preservation.

The award was given for the firm's work in the renovation of the Gardener's Cottage, which was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

The jury giving the award commented: "The Gardener's Cottage – Masterful addition and restoration of a master's little gem. All of the proportions and details of this job leave one thinking that Wright probably would have approved."

The firm was also honored by being selected to lead a team of architectural designers in a design studio in Detroit from April 2–4. The purpose of the event was to develop new uses for abandoned inner-city churches.

The design studio was sponsored by Partners for Sacred Places, coordinated by the Detroit Chapter of the American Institute of Architects and funded by the Lilly Foundation and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Ms. Foit-Albert was selected to lead one of the three design teams due to her work with St. Mary of Sorrows in Buffalo and other work with the reuse of existing buildings.

The results will be published by Partners for Sacred Places as a "How To" manual for giving new life to church buildings.
