Allentown Store in Housing Court

The continuing fight over whether 169 Allen Street is to be renovated or demolished has gone to housing court. Housing Court Judge Frank Sedita Jr. held a sidewalk hearing on July 6 to get a firsthand look at the building and decide whether the owner, Melvin Krebs, should be ordered to repair it or be allowed to demolish it.

The vacant building, built in the 1870's, is considered to be one of Allentown's oldest existing original storefronts.

The owner claims he has been unable to sell it while others say that he has been unwilling to consider offers.

Last year Krebs was given the "Dirty Brick Award" by the Allentown Association due to the deterioration of the property and Krebs's lack of attention to it.
