Roycroft Campus Declared National Historic Landmark
The Roycroft Campus in East Aurora was declared a National
Historic Landmark, the nation's highest historic designation, on February 26,
1986. The Campus, which was previously listed on the National Register of Historic
Places in 1974, was founded in 1895 by Elbert Hubbard and was a center for this country's
Arts and Crafts Movement in the early 1900's.
The owners of the Roycroft Inn, Kitty Turgeon, a founder of the Preservation Coalition,
and Bob Rust, a past president of the Coalition, who have actively sought the designation,
feel that this honor will increase the potential of the Roycroft as a tourism draw.
To celebrate the designation, the Preservation Coalition and the Roycrofters-At-Large
Association will join together in an official ceremony in the Roycroft Chapel (the
Aurora Town Hall) at 3 PM on Saturday March 22, 1986, followed by a wine and cheese
party at 4. From 11 AM-3 PM there will be an open house and tours of the campus.
The event is free and open to the public.
