Chippewa Street Lighting the way
Anyone who doubts the effects of scale need go no farther than Chippewa Street in downtown Buffalo. The city recently replaced tall, arching auto-scale cobrahead light standards with much lower, more closely spaced lamps atop straight poles. The effect during the day is unobtrusively pleasant, while at night, it is astounding to those who recall the cobraheads. The definition of the street is much better, with the historicist standards smartly marching along between sidewalk and curb, casting light more uniformly on lower building walls and sidewalk. The renewed human scale seems much more comfortable and inviting. Hats off to the citizens who made it happen, and the streets department for its implementation.
Now, when do we get these on Franklin Street in Allentown, where the widely spaced cobraheads cast their light on the trees from above, rendering sidewalk and roadway dark?
