Many people think preservationists are Luddittes, axes raised to stop the march of technology. Not so. Since the days of the first steam powered computer, the Preservation Coalition has been using modern technology to promote and save our heritage.

Over the years we have used increasingly powerful computers to produce the newsletter, process tour reservations, and memberships (and generate those ‘personalized’ renewal letters).

A few months ago we adopted an email address for electronic correspondence (PreserveCo@aol.com). We also have our own Special Interest Group (SIG) on the Buffalo Free-Net. The Buffalo Architecture and Preservation Group features a calendar of Coalition tours and events, a discussion group (Interface, man) and an “Ask the Coalition” area.

Later this year we plan to start posting articles from the Buffalo Preservation Report to the area so people can access them who are unfamiliar with the ancient newsprint interface.

The following contains information which may totally confuse some readers. Reader discretion is advised.

Members of the Free-Net can access our SIG by typing Go Preservation after the main menu.

Those without a Free-Net account can set their software to No Parity, 8 bit, VT100 emulation and dial (716) 645-3085. When cued to log in, type Freeport. After opening the screen, to visit the Coalition area as a guest, merely type Go Preservation. Guests may not be able to access all areas (particularly areas where dirty laundry, skeletons, crazy aunts, and The Skinny are stored).

To get a Free-Net account once logged on, type Go Admin, then select Apply for Account and follow the procedures listed there.

Those with access to the Internet can telnet to the Free-Net (telnet freenet.cc.buffalo.edu.) The log in procedure is the same as above.

Later this year we plan to add World Wide Web access to our area. Once we link up with the Tri Lateral Commission and the Bildeburgers, we will be unstoppable.
