Coalition to play major role in Judge Nowak's Collaborative

On June 9, in the Common Council Chamber, Buffalo Housing Court Hank Nowak unveiled his Neighborhood Preservation Collaborative -- an attempt to bring preservation organizations and neighborhood groups together to cooperate for the good of the city. In Nowak's words:

We all share a concern regarding the deterioration of characteristic buildings and neighborhoods in the City of Buffalo.  We hope that this collaborative will engage in proactive measures to safeguard these notable structures and communities from neglect and demolition.

Eight committees have been set up and four of them are chaired by Coalition trustees:

In addition, Garrett and Coalition trustee Chuck LaChiusa have joined forces with Landmark Society Executive Director Dennis Galucki to begin a preservation fund which will include "gap funding" plus much more.

Beginnings

The Preservation Coalition originally initiated the meetings with Judge Nowak to develop a closer working relationship with the housing court to prevent future situations such as Schmidt's garage. Judge Nowak expanded upon the Coalition's ideas to come up with the Neighborhood Preservation Collaborative.

Preservation Coalition Executive Director Scott Field, who has been working with Judge Nowak for the past year on this effort, will continue to serve on the Executive Committee of the Neighborhood Preservation Collaborative,
